Много хора забелязаха, че знамето на ЕС отсъства от визуалното оформление на новогодишната реч на Първанов за 2009, за разлика от 2008 г. Рога и Копита научи от достоверни източници, че нещата са можели да идат още по-далеч.

Редакторите на БНТ едвам спасили европейския костюм на президента. Според изпратения от президентството сценарий Първанов трябвало да се появи пред публиката облечен като средноазиатски доганджия, със сокол на рамото и подпрян на древен арабски мушкет.

Така президентът искал дискретно да подчертае придобивките за България през 2009: костюмът - подарък от Ислам Каримов и мушкетът, дарен от шейха на Катар.

До българското знаме в ъгъла трябвало да бъде подпряно копие с конска опашка, което било експонат в историческия музей в Ашхабад преди да го закрие покойният Туркменбаши.

Туркменският лидер го подарил на Първанов за да подчертае историческата връзка между българския и туркменския народ. Подобна наративна функция, но без историческата компонента трябвало да изпълнява и соколът.

За късмет екипът на БНТ се оказал упорит и се преборил с президентските имиджмейкъри за по-европейски вид на президента, но не можал да спаси европейското знаме.
